The Myth of Economic Prosperity

Eco-Political Dimension & Ground Realities in Pakistan

Adnan Hafeez

Pakistan’s story of exceptional GDP growth in the last few years seems like a fairy tale turned into a reality. The current Government in Pakistan, nourishing under the shelter of khaki shadows, inhibited by the virtue of phrase, “Controlled Democracy”, has been arrogating it as a result of their immense and prudent economic policies. The financial authorities of Government of Pakistan, enthusiastically, international financial institutions and macro-economic indictors, technically and independent resources partially confirm the claims of GDP growth. There are various major concerns regarding the GDP growth in Pakistan.  Given all the political and social disasters, the sustainability of these economic indicators is being questioned throughout the country by the political leaders, electronic and print media, newspaper columnist and independent economists. Furthermore, such incidents of violence and political conflicts are constantly shattering the confidence of investors. Nevertheless, it is evident from all these traumas that government of Pakistan is perhaps living in a fantasy world and trying to paint a highly unrealistic picture of very short lived and un-certain socio-economic scenarios faced by the country (Deep; 2005: pg.1).
